Coronavirus causes cancellation of Minneapolis Convention 2020!

Wow, what a time to be a part of the NAEA Board of Directors. We have had one of the most trying and consuming weeks of all. We have had numerous zoom meetings to discuss the options and consequences of canceling the upcoming conference because of the Corona virus epidemic. Every board member has been there to represent our members and to present the knowledge of their own regions and divisions as this ever changing situation has evolved over the past few weeks and days. We have monitored our members as they have struggled with school closings, travel bans and sickness in their states. The board finally voted unanimously on March 12 to cancel Minneapolis 2020. The announcement was made the following morning via email, social media and the NAEA website. I don't know about everyone else but I feel very sad and have a great sense of loss. I know we made the right decision but we have spent months planning and preparing this conference for everyone and all of that excitement is just "poof" gone. My heart goes out to all of the award winners who will miss their special moment we had planned for and for all of the presenters who had spent hours of preparation and planning. The board and staff will continue to plan how to deliver these awards and honor the awardees. We will also create a plan for delivering materials and some of the sessions to our members virtually. The staff has been working so hard on all of this and continues to focus on how to serve our members. They are all so terrific! Mario Rossero, our brand new Executive Director has been marvelous in his first NAEA crisis and this event has definitely bonded the board to his tireless, inclusive, and visionary leadership. OK.....enough of all that! Let's all look forward to Chicago 2021! I just love the windy city.....NAEA will rock the city in 2021....might be our biggest and best ever! Make a plan!

November Board Meeting 2019

November 7-8, 2019 the NAEA Board met in Minneapolis at the Sheraton Hotel. It was an awesome meeting as we made plans not only for the upcoming 2020 convention in Minneapolis but also we celebrated the passing of the torch for NAEA Executive Director from Deborah Reeve to Mario Rosero. Deborah took her place on the board as Mario joined us to observe. January 20, 2020 is Mario's official starting date. Yes, it is an exciting time in the history of NAEA!

NAEA Southeastern Region Leadership Conference St. Petersburg, Florida July 25-27, 2019

I loved participating in the SE Region Leadership Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida! We began our time together with a Wowzer!Cultural Day! We toured murals (So many!) then on to the Museum of Fine Art, Lunch at Cafe Gala, Dali Museum, and finally The Chihuly Collection! It was an awesome day and we all just enjoyed being together. Spending this time together prepared us to work as a group the next couple of days as we listened and learned from SE state associations who presented advocacy tips, promoting membership and conference ideas. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: ED&I This session was led by our current NAEA President-Elect, James Haywood Rolling Jr. During the session we learned that we must move past the thought of race and cultural differences when thinking of ED & I. This is because ED & I includes disabilities, socioeconomic, belief systems and orientation. It takes a village of many diverse people to make our organization stronger. We need to reach out and invite all Art educators whether they are a regular classroom teacher who wants to know how to teach art better, a community artist who wants to collaborate or a certified teacher we need to invite all to the table that is KyAEA. This is a link on NAEA’s website to give you more info on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force: ttps://www.arteducators.org/community/national-task-force-on-equity-diversity-inclusion Currently, there is a call for nominations for the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Commission. The link is listed below: https://www.arteducators.org/about/platform-and-position-statements Advocacy Advocacy is a word that now brings different connotations to different stakeholders with the arts. So instead of saying the word advocate we have opted to use Champion, because we all need to be a Champion for the Arts!
